If you haven’t heard of it, the Bhut Jolokia, or the Ghost Pepper is the hottest chili on Earth according to the Guiness Book of World Records. It is grown in the rural regions of India, and is usually shipped in the United States and neighboring countries in dried and ground form. To experience a freshly-picked ghost pepper pod, here are tips and guidelines how to grow your own ghost pepper plants:
- The soil must be between 75°F and 90°F for the seeds to germinate properly. If your garden does not possess this warmth, you can use an artificial heater at the bottom of the pot (propagation mat). The most ideal temperature for ghost pepper plants is 85°F.
- Use sterilized soil to steer clear of contamination.
- Remember to always keep the soil moist—but not too wet to destroy the embryo in the seed.
- It takes more than 30 days for a ghost pepper plant to germinate, and a span of 160 days before harvest period.
- The pepper seeds should be covered in soil by a quarter of an inch.
- Before taking the plant outside, the seedlings should be transplanted 2-3 times.
- Remember to only take the plant out when the weather is unwavering and if the soil is warm.
- The ghost pepper plants should be at least 36 inches apart from each other.
- Although the ghost pepper is extremely hard to cultivate, it is easy to plant during hot seasons and can be sowed in simple containers such as egg trays and cups.
Like any other plant, patience is needed to successfully cultivate ghost pepper plants. Before harvesting full grown and ripe ghost pepper pods, make sure to wear protective gear like gloves or an eye mask to lessen the risk of getting an irritation. It’s not the hottest chili on the planet for nothing!
